Friends of Jed
|
A special thanks from Jed to all who have contributed unselfishly throughout the years to the GHJ project: You made the music better and best of all... we remain friends.

Tom Bard (aka Buzz Brady)
Buzz was the voice of experience for GHJ for the recording of "Go Out Happy" the band's debut cd. Buzz played the piano, organ, wurlitzer, accordion, sleigh bells, etc. to bring the recordings to life. His honky tonk piano track on "Whiskey Sunday" and funky stuff on "Scarecrow" remain a highlight of the disk! Tom is also featured on GHJ's second disk "and Monday was..." playing the organ, synth and Chamberlain. As is his way, Tom also provided much humor and "philosophy on life" during the recording sessions. After several years of performing and recording with GB Leighton, Tom has kept busy working on several musical projects including sitting in on a few Martin Zellar "Neil" shows and recording and performing with Lee Rude. His favorite band is the Knack (that just came to mind and so I put it in here). We look forward to working with Buzz in the future!

Bob Burns
Bob contributed greatly to the recording of "and Monday was..." with various B3, VOX and piano tracks throughout. Highlights are Bob's rockin' piano in "Tell Me", the VOX organ in "Personality Test" and the sweet piano and B3 in "Forever". A big thanks to Bob and his wife Beth for their support of GHJ. Bob, a talented singer/songwriter in his own right, also is the keyboardist for legendary Twin Cities' retro/alt/pop/punk rockers, the "Flamin' Oh's".

Tony Kamana
Tony played all of the percussion tracks on our first disk, "Go Out Happy" and he was kind enough to come back and add some percussion to "and Monday was...", including the bongos on "Emotionally Unavailable", triangle/castanets on "Tell Me" and the very cool percussive box, giving a beat to the heart felt ballad "Forever". Currently, Tony is drummer/percussionist for the "Hillbilly Voodoo Dolls", one of the best, if not THE best rockabilly/blues/rock/zydeco bands around. Check them out at www.hillbillyvoodoodolls.com Thanks Tony!

Greg Mosner
Moz, the human jukebox of classic guitar riffin' with his big book of country guitar licks has been a big help to the band by sitting in on several gigs in late 2000/early 2001and recording the lead guitar tracks on "and Monday was...", GHJ's second disk. His lead chops are highlighted on the following tunes: "Tell Me", "Emotionally Unavailable", "Personality Test", "Green Apple Candy" and "Let Me Down Easy". Greg's creativity as a guitarist/song writer can be heard on "All Systems Go", his self released CD (in 2001) featuring his studio group called Mozification System.

Stevt Napp
Lead guitarist Steve Napp ("The Napper") had jammed with Jed going way, way back to January 1996 when the band was known as "the Jedhounds" and gigging at such fine establishments as the Terminal Bar and Ace Box Bar. Steve's guitaring carried the band on many nights back then! Steve continued guitaring with the band (as it changed names to "Gin House Jed" in January 1997) through the end of 2000. We grew musically together and what a blast it was! Steve's Strat & Fender Twin combination made for a signature sound that helped define many GHJ tunes. Steve played lead and rhythm guitar on "Go Out Happy" and rhythm guitar on select tracks of "and Monday was...". A special thanks also goes to Steve's parents, Tom and Ann for their support of Steve and the band. Steve is currently playing guitar and bass for "The Squires", a most excellent polka/waltz/top 40 band.

Dan Beal
"Pianist/dry humorist/guru on life" Dan Beal performed live shows with the band for the better part of 2000. Dan brought a wealth of musical experience to the band, not just because he's older than me, but because he played in several rockin blues projects over the years. Dan's piano playing and back up vocals added a new dimension to the program. And that dimension was ______________ (fill in the blank for us Dan!). While we miss everyone, we really miss Mr. Beal's sense of humor and his "take" on the various minutia associated with the ups & downs of everyday life. A little wisdom goes a long way. Anyway, Dan, we miss the chops! Dan's out east now working for a major corporation.

Rich Swanson
Rich played bass guitar and sang back up vocals with the band from June 2000 through April 2001. A career move to Texas prematurely brought his GHJ days to an end. We miss his musical abilities and lively sense of humor! Rich did bass work and back up vocal work on the band's second cd "and Monday was...". We'll certainly miss Rich's rendition as lead vocalist on his old friend's blues tune "Livin' in the City", performed at the band's live performances. Rich and his wife Brenda moved to Del Rio, Texas in April 2001 to own and operate a bowling alley. Del Rio, Texas is Brenda's home town and, just like the TV show "Ed", she returned there to own and operate the existing bowling alley. No, she's not a lawyer like Ed and it's not Stuckeyville, but this is nonetheless a great adventure for the Swanson family! Del Rio is two hours west of San Antonio on the Rio Grande. We miss you guys! Drop us a line!

Jon Hammond
Bassist "Jonny Rock", brother of Jed, jammed with the band from January 1996 (when the band was known as "the Jedhounds") through February 1999. All I can say, Jonny is that hopefully some of those shows at O'Gara's made up for some of our pre-1996 musical adventures/disasters! Jon played the bass guitar on "Go Out Happy", the band's debut CD released in 1999. Jon and his lovely wife Bobbie can be seen taking in an occasional GHJ show. Jon's son Sam had been a big fan of GHJ when he was younger (pre-school)... but now that he's in grade school, were not sure what he listens to!

Volney Hendrix
Bass god Volney jammed with Jed previous to 1996 in a rock/funk/jam/pop thing called the "Tremors" for most of 1993 and 1994. Other members of this notorious group included Reggie (current GHJ drummer) and Erik "E-Man" Petersen on lead guitar. The group jammed at the now defunct 24 Bar and Fowl Play. Volney continued supporting the Jedhounds in 1996 and Gin House Jed in 1997 with back up vocal and percussion appearances at various shows. Volney played bass guitar and sang back up on "Whiskey Sunday", track # 8 on GHJ's debut CD "Go Out Happy". Since 1994, Volney has teamed with Minneapolis singer/songwriter Lee Zukor on various projects including "Buffalo Ballet"... "Radio, Radio"... "Charlie Bucket"... and "Lee Rude". Visit them at

Ivan Hyde (in memory of)
Ivan sang back up and lead vocals with Gin House Jed from May 1999 through March 2000. Ivan's high energy performance style brought vibrance and showmanship to the GHJ performances. Ivan sang lead vocals on various covers
such as "Closer to Free" (BoDeans), "Margaritaville" (Jimmy Buffet), and "Real World" (Matchbox 20). The band incorporated several of Ivan's original tunes into the set, including "Hello", "Believe in Me" and "Boss of Me". The
band's acoustic shows always included several solo acoustic performances by Ivan including various covers and additional originals of his. A special thanks to Ivan's close friend and reknowned pianist Tim O'Neill for sitting
in with the band on December 30, 1999 at O'Gara's Garage. A special thanks to Ivan's wife Teri and their family and friends for their support of Ivan's performing days with GHJ. He provided inspiration to us all. Ivan died
peacefully in his sleep on December 24, 2000. In memory, donations can be sent to: Ivan Hyde U of M Music Scholarship Fund, PO Box 41, New Prague, MN 56071

Howie Mische
Bassist Howie Mische jammed with GHJ from March 1999 through June 2000. Howie's bass work and back up vocals contributed greatly to the many live shows performed during his tenure with the group! "Joe Dirt Car" still rocks
(one of Howie's favs)! A special thanks to Howie's son Carlin who quietly enjoyed his computer games during several GHJ rehearsals. And Laura, thanks for still marrying Howie... even after you saw us play at the Cabooze! ...and Howie, thanks for letting us use you Hartke bass amp. Don't worry, if we break it, we'll send you a case of beer.

Dave Rangel
Songwriter and vocalist Dave Rangel sang back up and lead vocals and percussion for GHJ starting in mid-1997 through April 1999. Dave's strong vocals gave the band a more melodic and harmonic sound. Dave also made me a better singer... thanks! I always enjoyed hearing Dave sing lead vocals on a few of our covers such as "Free Fallin" by Tom Petty and "Wonderwall" by Oasis. Dave sang all of the back up vocals on "Go Out Happy", the band's 1999 debut CD (except for "Whiskey Sunday"). Dave's songwriting and singing talent is the driving force behind his current modern Brit-Pop project called "Mersey Side". |
